Programme

Justin Bowler continued his good pre-season form and went close with a curling shot from just outside the area in the first minute. However it was the home side that had the better of the opening phase. Pugh had a shot well saved by Mark Wilberforce before Bennett beat the United keeper in the sixth minute. Vickerage went close to making it 2-0 to the home team minutes later but United retaliated and Martin Woods saw his shot blocked and Rob Constable was wide with a shot from twelve yards, after a corner. United drew level in the seventeenth minute as Constable broke up a Frickley attack and found Jamie Winter. The midfielder launched the ball forward and it was partially cleared by a defender's header. However, the ball fell kindly for Andy Keogh, who was able to steer the ball into the net past home keeper Shackleton. A minute later and United took the lead and again. Andy Keogh was involved when his strong low angled shot could only be pushed away by Shackleton. Unluckily for the home side the ball hit Lindley, one of their defenders, and rebounded into the net for an own goal. Keogh seemed spurred on by his good fortune and was just off target a minute later. The home side struck back just before the interval when Gamewell equalized in the forty-third minute. United got the winner in the fifty-ninth minute when Martin Woods set up Harpal Singh and later Andy Keogh was denied a goal by a tight offside decision that went against him. United made several substitutions, Kevin Cronin replaced Stuart Edwards, Cousins replaced Brenton Leister and Edward Keyes came on for Justin Bowler. Damian Reeves and Chris Jones also replaced Harpal Singh and Jamie Winter later in the game.
